His men raced enthusiastically to follow him into battle. He followed Zhou Yu to defend against Cao Cao at the Battle of Chibi. The fire attack he devised to defeat Cao Cao's fleet was mentioned in the Records of Zhou Yu.” — Huang Gai was a famous general who served the Kingdom of Wu. His parents perished early in his life and left him to suffer many painful ordeals. He worked hard to master military strategy and proved himself at the Battle of Chibi. His contributions helped solidify the Kingdom of Wu's power. Huang Gai was righteous and appealed to virtue when he met conflict. In AD 199, when Sun Quan waged war on Huang Zu, a rebellion erupted in Wuling County. Huang Gai was ordered to squash the rebellion. With only 500 soldiers stationed at Wuling County to command, he had to call on his mastery of strategy to find victory. He ordered the soldiers to throw open the gates and allow the enemy into the city. When half their forces were inside, his 500 elite soldiers launched an ambush. The rebels were caught off guard and their formation was a mess. When the rebels surrendered, Huang Gai chose to execute only their leader. The soldiers appreciated his fairness and chose to follow him. As a reward for his victory at the Battle of Chibi, Sun Quan changed the name of the lake where Huang Gai trained his sailors to Lake Huang Gai and granted him the area as a private manor. Huang Gai was loyal and supported the kingdom his entire life.
