A great general should use his bravery as a foundation for careful tactics. One who is both brave and reckless is no better than a common soldier.” — Xiahou Yuan had much in common with Xiahou Dun: both were fierce generals who never missed the chance to join Cao Cao in the battlefield. He was the kind of man who would always charge to the front lines, and he had the guts to make quick decisions. During the 19th year of the Jianan period, Ma Chao became enraged and marched his troops to Qi Mountain after his wife was killed by Cao Cao's army in a secret plot. Most of the generals in the city had planned to make their first move only after Cao Cao arrived: Xiahou Yuan had other plans. Knowing that Cao Cao was far away in Ye City, he decided on his own to begin an attack. He deployed Zhang Lin with 5,000 troops to a shady path near Chencang. Xiahou Yuan stayed behind to support the other generals. His strategy enabled Cao Cao to finally bring down both Ma Chao and Han Zhu, as well as to grab their armies' precious supplies. Cao Cao praised Xiahou Yuan's bravery in battle. When Xiahou Yuan suppressed a revolt caused by Long You and Song Jian, Cao Cao was so happy he quoted Confucius to express that his battle skills were far inferior to the general's. Song Jian's revolt had thrown Liang Province into chaos for 30 years. Xiahou Yuan's victory greatly boosted the morale of Cao Cao's army. But the warlord constantly reminded his general that bravery isn't everything in battle.
