Xu Huang

Xu Huang
“Cao Cao walked the camp to observe his soldiers. As he passed by, most soldiers broke formation to get a glimpse of the great warlord. Only Xu Huang's troops remained steadfast. 'General Xu is like the famous Han Dynasty general Zhou Yafu,' Cao said as he passed the men. When Cao Pi succeeded the throne of the Kingdom of Wei, Xu was made his highest general.”

Xu Huang was among Cao Cao's strongest generals. The warlord paid ample attention to Xu Huang, and in each battle ordered him to the vanguard. Xu Huang never let Cao Cao down: he fought many battles and was both brave and cunning. For the sake of the Kingdom of Wei, he repeatedly faced death.

Xu was originally one of Dong Zhuo's men, but he was unsettled by the brutality of Liang Province's commanders. When Cao Cao moved the young emperor to Xuchang, Xu gladly surrendered himself to the warlord.

In the siege of Yiyang, Cao Cao was repelled by the defenders. At first, Cao Cao hoped to take the city by force. However, Xu Huang suggested they should bait the defenders into surrendering. He told Cao Cao that it would set an example, and could avoid the problem of later resistance or rebellion. Xu Huang wrote a sincere letter asking the defenders to surrender, and their commander Han Fan agreed. Xu's ability to make his enemies bow without bloodshed proved his ability.

In the battle at Xiangyang at 219 AD, Xu again he used his wisdom to bring down Yan City. He charged into the enemy so fiercely that even Guan Yu, whose name was already widely known, felt threatened. He saved Cao Ren and ended the besiegement of Xiangyang and Fan City. Xu was able to defeat his enemies because he trained his army to be exceptionally orderly and careful. In battle, he always sent scouts to search the road ahead. He was in the front lines of each charge.

It's no wonder Cao Cao compared him to the famous Western Han general Zhou Yafu.
